Netgear Port Forwarding [Detailed User Guide]

If the network that you use in your home contains a server, you can specify the kind of incoming traffic that reaches the server. You can make a server visible and available to the internet like an FTP server, a local web server, etc.

So, the incoming traffic with specific protocols can be forwarded by the router to computers on the local network and Netgear port forwarding allows you to do just that on your Netgear router.

How to Port Forward a Netgear Router:

We will provide the instructions in detail regarding how to port forward on Netgear. Go through the steps outlined below to port forward.

  • You have to find the port number that the application uses. To find that information you have to contact the application’s publisher. Besides this, you can contact the user groups or the newsgroups as well.
  • Using a device that is using the network of your router, you have to open a web browser.
  • Type on the address bar of the browser and this will take you to a login window.
  • Then you have to put the username and password. Admin is the username and ‘password’ will be the default password. Then you will see the BASIC Home screen.
  • Next, you have to click on ADVANCED then choose Advanced Setup and select Port Forwarding and Port Triggering.
  • You have to select the Port Forwarding radio button as the service type.
  • Then click on the button ‘Add Custom Service.’
  • Put a descriptive name in the field of Service Name.
  • Choose a protocol in the field of Service Type. Choose TCP/UDP if you are not sure about it.
  • Then you have to put the beginning port number in the field of External Starting Port. Put the same port number in the field of Ending Port, if a single port is used by the application. Put the range’s ending port number in the field of External Ending Port, if a range of ports is used by the application.
  • You have to identify the internal ports, using one of the processes below.
  1. Select the checkbox of the ‘Use the same port range for Internal port’.
  2. In the fields of Internal Starting Port and Internal Ending Port, you have to put the port numbers.
  • In the field of ‘Internal IP address’ put the IP address. You can select the radio button for the attached device, from the list.
  • Now you have to click on the Apply button. Now, the service is on the list of the page of Port Forwarding or Port Triggering.

Hopefully, following these instructions you’ll be able to port forward your Netgear router without any hassles.
